We started blending words with the "short a" vowel. I have some precious pictures of the kids wearing letter vests as we created words, but technology is failing me at the moment! The pictures will not load. I will have to try to do it from home tonight. When possible, practice making/reading words with the short a to read with your child. For example,
mat, tap, pan, map, man, sat, Sam, Pam, etc. are good words to begin with. Practicing this early will really begin to pay off quickly!!!
On a fun phonemic awareness note, ask your child about the "Buddy Boogie!" We had a blast learning some new songs. They loved "My Friends are Marching Round and Round...Hurrah, Hurrah!" as well! These are new words to familiar tunes that force students to think about the SOUNDS they hear in the words!!! They are really picking up on these quickly!! Just don't ask them how well Mrs. Miller sings?!?!? Ha! I am glad they think I sing beautifully!!! Kindergarten is so much fun!
Thanks for all you do to help your little one learn!!
