OOPS...This was left off of your news sheet!!

· Start collecting bottle tops again…need them for glue!!

News for this week...

Phonics/Spelling Words: The “Bossy R” comes back with more vowels!! We will be working with “r-controlled vowels” this week. These words may be hard for your child to spell correctly because many of the digraphs sound the same. Practice as much as you can!!
Spelling Words are:

her, fur, turn, bird, girl, first, quit, when, name, work TEST IS FRIDAY!

High Frequency Words—words your child needs to recognize, read, and use in a sentence. We will go over these words daily.

always, by, Cow’s, join, nice, please, room

Vocabulary: These are words we will learn about through our Storytown Reading program. Remember…your child does not have to read or spell these words. We will be discussing their meaning! Words for this week are:
captured, mercy, struggling, compatible, amiable, relax

Sight Words: NEW TEST DATE—WEDNESDAY! Alyssa’s mom has volunteered to test sight words for me and Wednesday is the day that works for her. PRACTICE sight words every night!

Math: Graphs including: bar graphs, pictographs, Venn Diagrams—your child will create graphs as well as analyze information by reading graphs.

**We will continue reviewing skills such as tally marks, greater than/less than, and place value. If you see your child is having a hard time with a skill, please help them practice at home!**

Writing: Writing is improving, but students need to write more than one sentence. Many children are waiting for me to spell words for them—something I will not do! Your child’s writing is linked directly to their literacy skills…they need to sound out words and write what they hear. I am more concerned with their CONTENT!! I want to see several sentences about the same subject and a picture that matches their writing. Many students are writing about the same things and only using words they know they can spell correctly. I want the class to take chances and attempt to write the stories they have in their head…your children have wonderful imaginations and need to learn to put those ideas on paper! The entire class is working on this…I expect our writing skills to improve exponentially in the next few weeks!!!

Theme: We will be making some fun Christmas decorations during our Social Studies time this week. Can’t wait to see the room all “prettied up!”

Extra Information:
· We have already used all of the glue sticks you sent at the beginning of the year. If you can, PLEASE send glue sticks!!!
· I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!!

· Send Money for Art Project ($3) ASAP!

· Students are improving at working independently! You will see how much work they are getting done in their center work folders that go home every Friday. Please review the work with your child, sign the green sheet, and return folders every Monday. Let me know if you have any questions.

· Upcoming PTO Dates:
Dec 1st—Yearbook Buddy Ad Deadline & Dec. 7th—pics with Santa $5

FREE DANCE...Wa-Hoo!!

Remember the "Rain, Rain, Go Away" Song?!?! Primary Teachers sing it more than you know! Ha!! To relieve some energy, the kids worked for some "Free Dance" time! We rocked out to some High School Musical and had a great time! The boys got to dance first because they won the "clean bathroom" contest!! This was the first time for us to do "Free Dance," but it will be a huge motivator from now on!!!

The boys!
The girls!!

Let's all dance!

"Walk like an egyptian!!"

Break-dancing!! I had to tone down some of these moves...no one was hurt!

Human Tally Marks!!

As a fun way to reinforce the "SLASH" on tally marks, we made HUMAN TALLY MARKS!! The kids had a great time...and hopefully they will remember when to slash their tallies!!

HARD WORKERS!

We have started our "Food Group Books!" We are learning about the different food groups and how to be a healthy eater!

"Thankful Turkey Feathers"

Here is the information for your November Take Home Project. I sent a turkey feather home in your child's folder today. **The feather will point UP!**

Here are the details...

Your child gets to decorate this “feather” for our Thanksgiving Turkey! They can paint or color the feather and then add pictures or items of things they are most thankful for. You may choose to trace the feather onto a different colored piece of poster board or cover with fabric…however you and your child wish to decorate it. Make sure your child’s name is on the front of the feather so all can see who created it! You may send the feather to school as soon as you complete it and I will add them to our class turkey. Your child will also get to share their feather with the class. I hope this will be a fun project to complete with your child and a great way to discuss all the things we have to be thankful for!! Have fun! J MM

I'm BAAAA-AAACK!!!

Welcome Back! I feel like I am preparing for the first day of school! Mrs. Lee has done an awesome job with our class and I will be forever grateful for my time at home with Morgan. But, it is back to the “real world” for me, so please be patient as I “find my footing” in first grade! I will not be giving super detailed information below because I will be assessing students and getting to know new students the remainder of this week. If you have any questions, please email me at lmiller@tcss.net Thanks! MM

Phonics: Working on the digraph /ch/. Remember, a digraph is when 2 letters go together to form one sound.

Vocabulary: These are words we will learn about through our Storytown Reading program. Remember…your child does not have to read or spell these words. We will be discussing their meaning!
Words for this week are: astonishing, continue, doubt, transform, examine, devour

Sight Words: I will try to continue doing sight words the way Mrs. Lee has done them. I know I will not have time to assess children twice a week. So, sight words will be assessed each Friday. If there is a parent who can commit to test sight words each week, PLEASE call me!

Spelling Words: Test Friday!
chip, chin, inch, such, catch, match, wish, shop, saw, were

Math: We will be working on fact families this week. A fact family is where three numbers added or subtracted go together.
For example, 2, 3, and 5 are a fact family. 2+3=5, 3+2=5, 5-3=2, and 5-2=3
When we understand how these numbers interact with each other, it is easier to learn and understand addition and subtraction facts.

Writing: I cannot wait to see the progress the class has made with writing!

Theme: We will begin a unit on nutrition this week.

Extra Information:
· Book Fair will be Nov. 8-12th in the Library. I will let you know what time we will go.
· Slushy Day is next Wednesday
· No school next Thursday…Happy Veteran’s Day!
