A Surprise from SPARKLE!!!

Sparkle brought the kids MAGIC Jolly Ranchers from the North Pole and a letter telling them he is so proud their behavior is improving...what a lucky bunch of first graders we are!!!!Josh M. was the first to spot Sparkle and the letter...
He did a great job reading and attacking some hard words to read the letter!! Way to go, Josh!

News for the week...

Phonics/Spelling Words: Because I was out so much last week, I want to “reteach” this spelling/phonics rule. I did not leave a Spelling test for the sub because I did not feel I had taught the skill enough. SO, the words for all areas will stay the same this week and I will make sure everyone understands and can read these words! We will test Thursday—the class party is Friday!!
· The /le/ end syllable.
Spelling Words are:

hand, handle, wig, wiggle, single, little, turn, girl, by, room TEST IS THURSDAY!

**Ask your child about our “Attack Words!” They are excited about decoding multi-syllable words!

High Frequency Words—words your child needs to recognize, read, and use in a sentence. We will go over these words daily.

buy, carry, money, other, paint, paper, would

Vocabulary: These are words we will learn about through our Storytown Reading program. Remember…your child does not have to read or spell these words. We will be discussing their meaning! Words for this week are:
agreement, unnoticed, unthinkable, rejoice, predicament, extraordinary

Sight Words: NEW TEST DATE—WEDNESDAY! Alyssa’s mom has volunteered to test sight words for me and Wednesday is the day that works for her. PRACTICE sight words every night!

Math: Continuing with Graphs including: bar graphs, pictographs, Venn Diagrams—your child will create graphs as well as analyze information by reading graphs.

**We will continue reviewing skills such as tally marks, greater than/less than, and place value. If you see your child is having a hard time with a skill, please help them practice at home!**

Writing: Still working on improving content! Keep up the good work!

Theme: The Human Body unit has been postponed until January! There is too much going on with Christmas! We need to enjoy the season…we are only in first grade once!!

Extra Information:
· Send Art Money--$3 **Several of you have not sent this yet…PLEASE do so as soon as you can!
· Ask your child about “Sparkle!” He is our class elf who reports to Santa every night!!
· Christmas Party sign up comes home today. Please sign up for what you would like to bring!
· BOOK SWAP!!! Each child needs to bring a WRAPPED book to swap with a friend! Girls will swap with girls and boys will swap with boys! As your child brings their gift in it will get a number. During our party, children will draw a number and get that book to open. Please spend $5-$10 on your book so each child gets a book of equal value. We will do this December 17th at our party!
· Needed Items: glue sticks, cotton balls, & plastic bottle tops

· December Dates to remember:
o Dec. 15th—Field Trip to the Bama Theater to see “Winnie the Pooh-A Christmas Tail!” Send your permission form and $5 so your child can go!
o Dec. 17—Class Christmas Party and Book Swap…more details to follow!
o Dec. 20—Pajama Day!
o Dec. 21—Game Day…Christmas Break begins after school!
· Reminders from the Office:
o You may NOT bring “outside food” for your child to eat in the lunchroom—it is against Tuscaloosa County Board Policy. So, please do not bring McDonald’s or Taco Casa for your child to eat at school.
o If your child is a car rider, please write their name on a piece of paper to go in your dashboard…this will help the teachers get your child as quick as possible—especially on rainy days!!

Center Work will come home Monday...

Dear Parents,

Your child may have told you, but I have been terribly sick this week. I have the worst case of bronchitis I have ever had. So, I have had to miss two and a half days of work this week—it is hard to teach first grade if you have no voice to talk! Unfortunately, I do not have your child’s center work graded & filed—I will send it home Monday. I do know that they have been completing assignments and doing a better job this week! I hate that I am messing with our routine now that everyone has caught on. But, some things cannot be helped! Thanks for understanding.

Meet SPARKLE!

I would like you to meet Sparkle! He is an elf Santa sent to our classroom. He is a magical elf that reports to Santa every night. Sparkle moves through the classroom when the students and I are out of the room. He is checking their work and getting in different postitions so he can see what every child is doing.

This is where we found Sparkle last Thursday! He was perched on top of our Christmas tree!Another place Sparkle likes to sit...ask your child where Sparkle was today!

**Sparkle did not show up last Friday until after PE...the class had such a rough day on Thursday-- I was not sure he would show up at all. But, the class improved thier behavior and attitudes...we were so glad to see Sparkle again! I hope he stays with us the entire month of December!!**
