Phonics: We will continue working with “long vowels” and the “sneaky e” rule this week. Long vowels are when the vowel says its name—not the sound! We are also working on fluency skills by reading a lot of “decodable” books and nursery rhymes in our poetry notebooks!
Vocabulary: We have started to read another chapter book, Charlotte’s Web! In addition to working on comprehension skills, I am pulling 3 vocabulary words out of each chapter. Children’s literature is full of fabulous words that will enhance your child’s vocabulary. We are calling these vocabulary words WOW words. We have been doing vocabulary lessons throughout the year, but kids are more excited about these because they are excited about the story! I am going to give you a pretty long list of words—some from last week, and the rest are words we will learn this week. Try to use these words in your conversations at home—your children will be excited they know what these “fancy” words mean!!
· Last week’s words—vanished, adore, wept, trust, wander, commotion
· Words for this week—grazed, interesting, budge, racket, chuckling, determined, effort, calmly, ancient, thoughtful, sobbed, pleasant, delicate, boast, tremble
Sight Words: Here are your child’s individual list of sight words—test Friday. Some children are not recognizing sight words they have already passed off in books. If you see that your child is having this trouble, please help them practice “old” sight words. If you need a list of the first 100 words, just let me know!!
Math: We will begin measuring WEIGHT and VOLUME this week. We had a good review of subtraction last week and will review some addition this week as well. If you see your child is struggling in these areas, PLEASE help them practice at home!
Writing: Kids are ROCKING with their writing these days…light bulbs are going off and I am so proud!!!
Theme: We will continue studying habitats this week. We have studied The Wetlands—mostly pond animals, and the Rain Forest. We will study the OCEAN this week! The kids love learning about different environments and the animals that live there!

This blog is designed to encourage parent-teacher communication. I will post announcements for parents of my first graders here so they can access it any time! This blog will also be used to motivate student learning. Look for shared writing, photos of class events, and comments from students about what they are learning! Share the website with grandparents and friends...they must have the correct web address to find this blog.

Graduation Pictures
We will be taking Kindergarten Graduation pictures Thursday, April 22nd at 8:30. Your child will wear a white cap & gown for the picture. If you want your child's picture taken, you MUST pre-pay. The order forms went home last week. If you need another order form, let me know. Make all checks payable to main image photography.
Tips for better pictures...
1. Wear a white or very light colored shirt--colors will show through the white gown.
2. For girls--"flat hair" looks best! It is hard to fit the cap over pony tails, braids, or large bows!!
Money is due the morning of April 22nd. If you have not brought it by 8:15, your child's picture will not be taken!!!

Math: Kids are having some trouble adjusting to using rulers. If you see that your child is having trouble with measurement on their daily work and need a ruler to practice at home, I will be happy to let you borrow one. Just send me a note! We will continue working on addition and subtraction as well!
